Smith a triple winner at second NAAA meet

Veteran javelin thrower Gwendolyn Smith was a treble winner at the second National Association of Athletic Administration (NAAA) Development Meet at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva, on Saturday.

The Petrotrin Palo Seco athlete defeated her younger rival to win the women's open shot put, discus and javelin events. In the shot put, the reigning double World Masters Indoor champion won with a distance of 11.43 to finish ahead of Keva-Ann Blackman (Alpha), 9.37.

Smith took the discus with a throw of 34.37 and the javelin, 37.51, relegating Toco TAFAC junior Portious Warren, 31.50, and Cherisse Murray, 28.50, to the minor places for the second straight week.

Murray and Akidah Briggs (Toco Titans) were among several double winners.

Murray, the top under-20 field athlete last year took the women's shot put (13.02) and discus (35.65), while Briggs, who was the most outstanding female athlete as last year's secondary schools athletic championships, secured the girls U-17 shot put (12.49) and javelin (34.70) crowns.

In the shot put, the two time Carifta girls U-17 javelin medallist finished well ahead of Shaiann Charles (D'Abadie Progressive), 9.47, and Nikita Colthrust (Dovers), 7.51, while in the javelin, Briggs got the better of her Toco Titan clubmate Daniella Barker, 30.80. Briggs was also named to top U-17 field athlete last year.

Jenea Spinks (Neon Trackers) repeated her double win achieved at the first development meet on January 12.

Spinks, the most outstanding U-13 athlete for last season, stepped up the girls U-17 class and won the 150m (18.08) and 300 (41.55). At the January 12 meet, Spinks landed the girls U-15 150m and 300m double.

Other double winners were the Point Fortin New Jets pair of Timothy Fredrick (boys U-13 60m - 8.40 and 150m - 19.09) and Akeera Esdelle (girls U-15 60m - 8.41/150m - 19.20); Adel Colthrust of Southern Athletics (boys U-15 60m - 7.32/150m - 16.43).

The third development meet is cscheduled for Sunday at the Ato Boldon Stadium.
