Thomas, Walcott succeed James sets shot put PB

Reyare Thomas won the women’s 200 metres dash on the first day of action at the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Friday. The 2009 World Championships sprint relay finalist was first to the line in 24.16 seconds.


Thomas (Abilene Christian University) topped the first of nine heats and finished ahead of the New Mexico State pair of Brianna Cromartie (New Mexico State) 24.22 and Alishia Perkins (New Mexico State) 24.34, who were first and second in heat two.

Thomas was scheduled to contest the 60m event yesterday, the second and final day of the meet. Thomas’ school-mate Osei Alleyne-Forte, another T&T athlete, was first in heat six of the men's 200m and was 15th overall. Alleyne-Forte and Jarrin Solomon were expected to run in the 400m yesterday.

Earlier in the month, Thomas was fifth in the women’s 55m final at the Tech Texas Masked Raider Open in Lubbock, Texas. The 2009 CAC Senior 200m bronze medallist got to the line in 7.07.

Elton Walcott, elder brother of Olympic men’s javelin champion Keshorn Walcott, won the men’s triple jump in Lubbock. The South Plains Junior College first year student took the top spot with a leap of 15.59. Walcott won the 2011 Pan American Junior title in Miramar, Florida, USA with a wind-assisted leap of 16.51. He also set a new national mark of 16.43m at the same meet.

Hilenn James (Georgia) set a new personal best (pb) in finishing fourth the women’s shot put at the opening day of competition of Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Friday.

The former Carifta champion got the put to 16.80 on her first effort to lie in third but was overtaken for the bronze by Alyssa Hasslen (Arizona) in the fifth round with her throw of 16.85. James improved on her previous best of 16.54 established set outdoors last year.

Shermund Allsop (Louisiana State University) advanced to the finals of the men’s 60m after he was 11th overall in the preliminaries clocking 6.90. Allsop was fourth in heat one and will run in one of two races of the finals. He was also 19th overall in the men’s 200m in a time of 21.80 taking second in heat three. Sparkle Mc Knight was also listed to make her debut for Arkansas University in the women’s 400m and 4x400m events which were contested yesterday.

On the local scene, the third NAAA development meet is set for later today at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva from 10 am.
