Thomas records sprint double

Reyare Thomas (Abilene Christian) sped to an impressive sprint double at the New Mexico Invitational in Alburquerque, New Mexico on the weekend.

Thomas landed the women’s 200m title on Friday in 24.16 and returned on Saturday to secure the 60m finals in 7.58 seconds, edging Sharron Williams (New Mexico JC) 7.59 and Natasha Gay (Wayland Baptist) 7.62. Thomas was a member of T&T’s women’s 4x100m team which finished seventh in the sprint relay finals at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin Germany.

She missed a third medal when she was part of Abilene Christian’s 4x400m team which finished fourth in the 4x100 metres in 3:50.06.

Olympic mile relay bronze medallist Jarrin Solomon completed his second win of the season when he captured his third straight 400m title. Solomon completed the two-lap indoor sprint in a personal best time of 46.32 (previous best 46.55). Solomon finished ahead of Americans Marcus Boyd, 46.74 and Durawn Howards (Wayland Baptist) 47.57. Thomas’ school-mate Osei Alleyne Forte was 17th in 49.88.

Solomon, a member of T&T’s Olympic men’s bronze medalling 4x400 team won the 600m in 1:17.63at the same venue on January 18. At the Cougars Indoor Invitational in Pullman, Washington, Shawna Fermin was third in the women’s 60m in 7.66 as her Washington State team swept the top three spots in the event.

The 2012 NACAC Under 23 women’s 4x400m silver medallist was beaten to the line by Cindy Robinson (7.62) and Dominique Keel (7.65). Fermin then helped her school’s 4x400m team to victory in a meet record of 3:46.07.

Shermund Allsop (Louisiana State University) bowled out at the semifinals stage in the men’s 60m at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas finished 10th in 6.94. Florida’s Jovon Toppin was third in his 400m heat (48.91) and 28th overall.
