Early start for Butler Classic

Trinidad Guardian :: 18.06.2013

This year’s 31st OWTU Butler 20K Run and 20K Walk will begin one hour earlier than previous years with OWTU President Ancil Roget carded to start the event at 5 am on Labour Day in front of the Paramount Building, Circular Road, San Fernando.

Spectators will have to be out on the roads an hour earlier than usual to see the front pack of runners that will include fleet-footed Guyanese road runners Lionel Dandrade and Kelvin Johnson, local stalwart Curtis Cox, Elvis Turner of Tobago and Sandino Nero.

They will course on the San Fernando Bye-pass, go through La Romaine, proceed on the South Trunk Rd to Fyzabad, and finish at the Charlie King Junction.

T&T’s distance-running queen Tonya Nero of Athletics Central will defend her female crown from last year and the earlier start and cooler conditions could mean yet another record-breaking performance. She will be challenged by Celine Lestrade, Janelle Nedd, Christine Regis and Paulette Lucess. The top race walkers last year were Ancil Green and Lima Chune.

The 4.5 kilometre race for juniors 15 years and under will also start earlier at 6 am from Jovan Grocery in Harris Village. All race participants are required to pre-register at OWTU’s offices in Port-of-Spain and San Fernando.

The earlier start is to facilitate finish line volunteers who have to leave to join the march at Avocat Junction.
