Cox, Nero claim Butler 20k titles

CURTIS COX and Tonya Nero were the respective winners of the men and women categories, at yesterday’s 31st OWTU (Oilfield Workers Trade Union) Butler 20k (20-kilometre) run, from the Paramount Building, Circular Road, San Fernando to the Charlie King Junction in Fyzabad.

Cox, the former national marathon winner representing Simplex club, completed the course in one hour nine minutes and 58 seconds.

The 45-year-old took the lead after five kilometres and never relinquished his advantage, as top Guyanese long-distance runner Kelvin Johnson took the silver medal in one hour 12 minutes 34 seconds and Kennis Bullard got the bronze in one hour 14 minutes 33 seconds.

Completing the top spots were Lionel Dandrade (1:15:11), the evergreen Cantius Thomas (1:20:47), Dexter Kanhai (1:21:31), Nelinho Mierez (1:22:22) and Anthony Roster (1:22:51).

Tonya Nero of Athletics Central continued her winning ways, clocking one hour 23 minutes 42 seconds to wow the colourful Fyzabad crowd.

The battle for second place was taken by Christine Regis (1:36:10), while Sara Oullette (1:37:43) was third, followed by Wendy Shallow (1:42:49), Paulette Lucess (1:49:53), Candice Bekaroo (1:51:28), Rosamund Jolly (1:58:20) and Josanne Rojas (2:01:38).

There was also a 20k walk, which saw Brian Francis emerging as the winner in 2:04:55, Eustus Weekes (2:20:29) placed second with Ignatius Alvarez (2:21:43) third.

Among the women, Gemma Thompson triumphed in 2:31:30, ahead of Karen James-Begg (2:40:43) and Joanne Dyette (2:42:22).

In the Butler 4.5 kilometre race for juniors 15-and-under, the winner was Matias Nero of Maracas/St Joseph in 15 minutes 29 seconds. Kriston Charles was second in 15:56 and Jordan Hills claimed third in 16:35.

Among the girls, Shania Francois triumphed in 19:51, Ashakie Hagley took the second spot in 20:27 and Khadiyah Kellawan copped third in 21:12.
