Hackett, Borel defend CAC titles

Semoy Hackett and Cleopatra Borel are expected to defend their Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championship titles, on the opening day of the meet, in Morelia, Mexico, today.

At the 2011 edition of the Championships, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Hackett captured the women’s 100 metres crown in 11.27 seconds. Hackett and Reyare Thomas will represent Trinidad and Tobago in the event, in Morelia today.

Borel dominated her rivals to strike gold in the women’s shot put, two years ago, the T&T field athlete throwing the iron ball 19.00m. Today, Borel will bid to repeat her golden feat.

Jamol James and Ayodele Taffe will fly the T&T flag in the men’s 100m dash, in Morelia.

Richard Jones and Curtis Cox, better known for their achievements on the road, will bid for track honours, in the CAC Senior Championship men’s 10,000m event.

A bronze medallist in Mayaguez two years ago, Quincy Wilson will bid for improvement in today’s men’s discus event.

In the men’s long jump, Kyron Blaise and Dwaine Herbert are expected to represent the Red, White and Black.

Another defending champion, Renny Quow will be on show today, in the qualifying round of the men’s 400m.

In Mayaguez, Quow was first home in 45.44 seconds, and he will strive to do the same in tomorrow’s one-lap final. Among the men hoping to dethrone Quow is his T&T teammate Jarrin Solomon.

Also in action today will be Shawna Fermin and Romona Modeste, in the women’s 400m heats.

At the 2011 CAC Senior Championships, T&T finished third on the medal table with six gold medals, three silver and five bronze. Jamaica topped the table with ten gold medals, six silver and ten bronze, while second spot went to Mexico—seven gold, six silver, seven bronze.
