Horsford grabs CAC age-group bronze

Tyriq Horsford finished third in the Boys 13-14 Heptathlon at the 15th Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Age Group Championships in Willemstad, Curacao which ended on Sunday.

The Parlatuvier resident amassed 5,214 points in the seven-discipline to earn T&T’s lone individual medal at the two-day meet.

The Signal Hill Secondary/Zenith athlete was beaten for the title by Sebastian Romero (Puerto Rico) 5,302 and the long time leader of the event Enzo Hodebar of Guadeloupe (5226).

Horsford was second after six events on 4,823 points after he recorded a massive throw of 94.59m in his strongest event, the ball throw, to move up from third after five events. Hodebar was ahead (4,965) with Romero in third (4,756). But in the final event Romero got the best result of 3:49.88 seconds, to score 546 points to take the gold. Hodebar was second despite trailing behind in 4:41.67 (261 points).

Horsford completed the three lap event in 4:15.17 to score 391 points but the tally was not enough to win. Horsford’s Zenith team-mate Franklyn Staniclaus (Bishop) ran 4:10.13 to move up to eighth after lying in 12th coming into the final event. Stanisclaus tallied 4,723 points.

However, both did enough to guide T&T to the Boys 13-14 team title. Their combined scores of 9,947 was enough for gold.

Hosts Curacao was second (9, 694), ahead of the Bahamas (9,613).

On Saturday the mixed 13-14 4x100m team of Horsford, Staniclaus, Anya Akili and Aquilla St Louis finished second in 47.95 behind the Bahamas (47.27).

Goodwood resident Safiya John was fourth in the Girls 11-12 Pentathlon. John amassed 2,727 points and missed out on a top three finish by 33 points.

Charissa Moore of Barbados copped the top spot with 2,860 with Zekiah Leiws of Bermuda taking silver (2,773) ahead of Beyonce De Freitas of the British Virgin Islands, who collected the bronze with 2,770 points.

John, a student of Scarborough Secondary, was lying in third at the end of the first day on Saturday with 1757 points but slipped out of the top three after her performances in the long jump (4.67m/554 points) and the 800m (2:43.48/440 points).

The Zenith athlete was ahead of T&T’s other entrant Antonio Sealy (Pt Fortin New Jets) was 16th with 2,471 points.

John had to settle for another fourth place as she and Sealy was edged out of a podium finish in the team award with 5,198 aggregate score. Barbados was first (5,409) ahead of Curacao (5,369) and St Kitts Nevis (5,213).

In the Girls 13-14 Heptathlon, St Louis finished 12th with 3,686. The D’Abadie Progressive/St Francois Girls athlete dropped four places from her eighth position at the end of day one.

Anya Akili (Zenith/Bishop) ended in 23rd on 3,505 points. Akili was at 22nd at the end of the first day of competition. Shaifiqua Maloney (St Vincent and the Grenadines) won gold (4,202) ahead of Doneisha Anderson of Bahamas (4,151) and day one leader Iman Berthelot of Guadeloupe (4058). St Louis and Akili had a combined total of 7,191 which was only good enough for sixth in the team award.

Joel Andrews (D’Abadie Progressive) was 15th in the Boys 11-14 Pentathlon with 2,790 points with club-mate Avindale Smith in 23rd (2,690). Andrews was 16th after day one while Smith was 21st. Andrews and Smith tallied 5,480 together and had to settle for eighth.
