Jarrin Solomon became only the second man from Trinidad and Tobago to earn Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championship 400 metres gold when he topped the field in the men’s one-lap final, in Morelia, Mexico, yesterday.

At the 2011 edition of the Championships, Renny Quow regained the title he first won in 2008. But the T&T quartermiler was a non-finisher in his qualifying heat on Friday, missing out on the opportunity to defend his title and become a three-time champion.

Solomon, however, kept the Red, White and Black flying high, the US-born athlete striking gold in 45.54 seconds. Jamaican Omar Johnson (45.67) and Dominican Republic’s Gustavo Cuesta (46.20) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Wayne Davis II seized silver for T&T in the men’s 110m hurdles. Running into a strong 3.4 metres per second headwind, Davis got to the line in 13.75 seconds. Gold medallist Shane Brathwaite, of Barbados, clocked 13.70. The bronze medal went to Cuban Yordan O’Farril (13.82).

Ayanna Alexander now has a complete set of CAC Senior Championship women’s triple jump medals. The T&T jumper earned silver yesterday, with a 13.17 metres effort, to add to her gold in 2011 and the bronze she had bagged back in 2008. Alexander came very close to making a successful defence of her title, missing out on the top spot by just one centimetre. Bahamian gold medallist, Tamara Myers disturbed the sand at 13.18m, while the bronze medallist, Mexican Liliana Hernandez jumped 12.90m.

The T&T combination of Kamaria Durant, Kai Selvon, Reyare Thomas and Michelle-Lee Ahye secured silver in the women’s 4x100m relay in 43.67 seconds. T&T finished behind Jamaica (43.58), and ahead of Bahamas (44.08).

And in the men’s sprint relay, the T&T quartet--Jamol James, Ayodele Taffe, Jereem Richards and Emmanuel Callender--clocked 39.26 seconds to bag bronze, behind Bahamas, the winners in 38.77, and Jamaica (38.86).

Aleesha Barber got to the line in 13.44 seconds to finish fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles final. Her T&T teammate, Denzel Ramirez returned a time of 16 minutes, 26.17 seconds to cop fifth spot in the men’s 5,000m. In the women’s 400m final, Shawna Fermin was sixth, the T&T quartermiler completing her lap of the track in 53.16 seconds.

And Emanuel Mayers clocked 50.49 seconds to finish second in heat two in the qualifying round of the men’s 400m hurdles.

The T&T athlete advanced automatically to today’s final.

Going into the third and final day of the CAC Championships, T&T have eight medals—two gold, three silver, and three bronze.
