Gold, bronze for TT at CAC

TRINIDAD and Tobago track and field athletes bagged one gold and two bronze on the opening day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championships yesterday in Morelia, Mexico.

Retaining her regional title was favourite Cleopatra Borel, who launched a golden distance of 17.56m in the Women’s shot put event. Borel’s winning throw saw her defeat eventual silver medallist Cecilia Dzul of Mexico (16.33m) and bronze receiver and compatriot Laura Pulido (15.69m).

Meanwhile Semoy Hackett also lined up to defend her 2011 Women’s 100m crown, but was eliminated after producing a false start.

Qualifying out of the preliminary stages with the seventh fastest time (11.45s), Hackett failed to successfully defend her crown which was eventually taken by Jamaica’s Sherry Ann Brooks in 11.21 second. Securing silver was Marielys Sanchez of the Dominican Republic (11.24) while Jamaican Aleen Bailey bagged bronze (11.34s). Local athlete, Reyare Thomas also contested this event, but did not advance to the finals due to a 10th place finish (11.71s) in the preliminary stages.

Claiming bronze for the twin-island republic yesterday was Quincy Wilson in the Men’s discuss and Kyron Blaise in Men’s long jump. Wilson threw a distance of 55.83m, finishing behind Jamican winner, Chad Wright (60.79m) and silver medallist Mexican, Mario Cota (58.58m).

The finals of the Men’s long jump saw Blaise leap 7.73m. Winning gold was home-boy Alberto Alvarez with 7.85m while Eddy Florian snatched silver with his jump of 7.80m. Local, Dwain Herbert also contested this event and finished 11th with 6.99m.

Meanwhile, the local duo of Jamol James and Ayodele Taffe failed to advance to the finals of the Men’s 100m event. In the preliminaries, James was tied for 14th place in a time 10.42s with St Lucian Corneil Lionel. Taffe preliminary time saw him finish 25th overall in 10.59s.

Distance runners, Richard Jones and Curtis Cox just missed out on medalling in the Men’s 10,000m run, as the duo finished fourth (35:08.93) and fifth (35:24.13) respectively.

A new champion will be crowned in the Men’s 400m event this year as 2011 winner Renny Quow, failed to finish the race. However, countryman Jarrin Solomon will hope to make amends for TT as he qualified to the finals with the fastest time (46.08s).
