Minister praises CAC performance

Newsday :: 09.07.2013

MINISTER of Sport, Anil Roberts, was full of praise for the national CAC athletes who finished third on the medal table with a haul of 13 (five gold, four silver and four bronze) at the Championships which concluded recently in Mexico.

The national women’s 4x400m team was in exceptional form, smashing a 26-year-old CAC record in the final.

The relay team, comprising Shauna Fermin (2013 national champion at 400m), Romona Modeste, Alena Brooks and Sparkle McKnight, copped gold in the 4x400 event, setting a new mark of 3:30.64.

Sport Minister Anil Roberts was in high praise of the achievement, as well as the entire team that returns home from the regional event.

“I must congratulate the 4x400m team for extending themselves and breaking a long-standing record. It’s a remarkable effort by the women athletes, especially on the heels of the double record (100m and 200m) set by Kelly Ann Baptiste at the National Championships. The entire team performance bodes well for the World Championships in August. The athletes must be eagerly awaiting the chance to prove themselves on the world stage and Trinidad and Tobago is equally ready to cheer them on,” he said.

Also creating history on the weekend was the Under-17 water polo team which won gold at the CCCAN Swimming Championships in Costa Rica – the first team to do so at this level. The team also qualified for the Pan Am Junior Championships to be held from August 24-31 in Argentina.

Trinidad and Tobago also picked up several awards at the tournament, including MVP (Adrian Hinds), Most Goals (Leon Daniel) and Best Goalkeeper (Sebastien Van Reeken).

Meanwhile, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago was also elated to be associated with the successful water polo team through Kevin Macintyre, a Massage Therapist attached to the Elite Development and Performance Unit at SPORTT. Macintyre is also the coach of the Bishops Junior School team which supplied four members to the national team, including MVP Adrian Hinds.
