Parris qualify for World Youth semis

Newsday :: 11.07.2013

JEMINISE PARRIS qualified for the semi-final round of the women 100- metre hurdles as the eighth IAAF World Youth (Under-18) Championships began in Donetsk, Ukraine yesterday.

The top three in each heat and the next six ‘fastest losers’ are guaranteed spots in today’s semis, with the final due to take place later on in the day.

And Parris managed to advance as one of the ‘fastest losers’, as she placed fifth in heat three in 14.19 seconds.

Chantal Butzek of Germany prevailed in 13.88, with Adriana Janie of Sweden (13.93) and Meg Hemphill of Japan (14.10).

In the semi-final phase, Parris will line-up in lane two of heat one - there are three semi-final races with the top two finishers, plus the next two ‘fastest losers’ can all look forward to today’s final.

In the women 100m first round, Kayelle Clarke was unable to advance to today’s semi-finals as one of the eight fastest losers (the top two from each of the eight heats automatically advanced).

Clarke placed third in heat one with a time of 12.40 seconds, behind Italy’s Annalisa Scott and Jamaica’s Jonielle Smith, who ran 12.12 and 12.13 respectively.

Kenejah Williams was eliminated in the qualification round of the men shot put, with the final taking place later in the day.

He entered the round in Group “B”, but was 14th in that bunch with a throw of 16.80m (the second of his three throws).

And Andwuelle Wright, in the men long jump, also missed a chance at progressing to the final.

In the qualification phase, Wright was eighth in Group “A” with a best effort of 6.99m - the second of his three jumps, and was not among the top 12 who advanced to the medal stage.

Today, Portious Warren and Chelsea James will feature in the women shot put (qualification round and possibly final) while Aaron Lewis will compete in the first round of the men 110m hurdles.

In the women shot put, there are two groups of 28 entrants, with Warren in Group “A” and James in Group “B”. And persons who throw 16 metres or the top 12 finishers will go forward to the final.

Lewis, in the preliminary round, has been drawn in lane one of heat four. The top three in each of the six heats, plus the next fastest six finishers, will book spots in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

Also tomorrow, Clarke will feature in the first round of the women 200m and Jonathan Farinha will participate in the men half-lap.
