Farinha, Clarke in World Youth 200 semis

Jonathan Farinha produced an impressive run in the opening round of the men’s 200 metres event, at the World Youth (under-18) Track and Field Championships, in Donetsk, Ukraine, yesterday.

With just one athlete in each of the 13 heats advancing automatically to today’s semis, Farinha booked the heat seven ticket with an easy victory. The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter clocked 21.46 seconds, for a comfortable cushion on second-placed Odane Bernard, the Jamaican getting to the line in 21.71.

Of the 97 sprinters who faced the starter in the men’s 200m preliminaries, Farinha was sixth fastest.

Cuba’s 100m bronze medallist, Reynier Mena led all qualifiers into the semi-final round with victory in heat 11 in 20.91 seconds. Michael O’Hara also dived under 21 seconds, the Jamaican winning heat 10 in 20.96.

The 100m champion, China’s Youxue Mo topped heat four in 21.53 seconds to secure his semi-final berth.

At 10.52 this morning (T&T time), Farinha will run in the second of three semi-final heats. He has been drawn in lane six, while O’Hara will run in lane four. Mena and Mo will clash in heat three.

Kayelle Clarke advanced to the women’s 200m semis, when she won heat six in the opening round of the event in 24.42 seconds. The T&T sprinter finished just ahead of Veronika Palickova, the Czech Republic athlete clocking 24.43 to finish second. Third spot went to Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Pereira (24.54).

The top three finishers in each heat progressed to the semi-final round.

Clarke, the 16th fastest sprinter on show in round one, will be back on the track at 10.24 this morning (T&T time), running in the third semi-final. She has been drawn in lane five.
