T&TOC hosts social responsibility camp for junior athletes

Trinidad Guardian :: 31.07.2013

Fourty young athletes from a number of sporting backgrounds were inspired by a one-week camp themed “Moulding Socially Responsible Athletes”, which was hosted by the T&T Olympic Committee (TTOC), and concluded on Saturday, at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya. Topics open to discussion included social responsibility, social innovation, communication, differently-abled athletes in sport, women in sport, HIV/Aids awareness, and Etiquette. Olympian Sherridan Kirk and national volleyball player Renelle Forde both spoke and inspired the young athletes, who represented sports including, badminton, dragon boat racing, football, hockey, judo, jump rope, netball, rugby, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, swimming, volleyball and water polo.

The camp concluded with a historical enactment with the campers parading the flags of the past ten Summer Olympic Games including song, dance and formal presentations. A local twist was added with a sailor dance choreographed by Micheal Lucien of Malick Folk Performers. TTOC president Brian Lewis gave the feature address and said the focus of the youth camp remains the Olympic values—excellence, friendship and respect. He urged the campers to reflect upon these values in their respective clubs, schools and homes. Lewis also asked the parents present to continue to support their children’s participation in sport, and he also reminded the young athletes that they were the future of the Olympic movement in T&T.
