Thomas, Riley strike gold

Joyce Thomas and Irma Riley won gold for T&T at the 14th biennial US National Senior Games which ended in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday.

At the 13-day multi-sport meet, Thomas led the way, taking the women’s 65 to 69 shot put with a 9.60m throw achieved in fifth round of the competition and took silver in the discus with a last round effort of 23.83m.

Riley captured the women’s 70-74 javelin title with a distance of 18.49m on her third attempt. Riley had a busy meet, finishing eighth in the triple jump, 12th in the long jump and the shot put and 14th in the discus.

Monica Tang-Wing missed on gold in the women’s 75-79 50m and 100m finals, having to take the runner up spots in 9.44 seconds and 17.59 seconds respectively. Tang Wing was also third int he 200m (40.10) and fourth in long jump, 5th in the triple jump and 9th in the shot put. Robert Stevenson was a triple silver medallist taking second place in the men’s 75-79 100m (14.17), 200m (27.79) and 400m (1:07.75). In each event, he was beaten to the line by Bob Lida of the USA. Susannah Joefield was 8th in the women’s 60-64 10K road race in 56 minute 01.03 seconds.

Terrance Skinner was tenth in the men’s 60-64 long jump (4.24) while Errol Thomas was also tenth in the men’s 65-59 1500m finals (6:03.08). Thomas was also ninth in the 800m prelims (2:46.05) and did not advance to the finals. Ruby Jackson was tenth in the women’s 70-74 50m prelims in 10.59 with Eulalia Irma Thomas finishing 11th quickest in the women’s 60-64 100m prelims (17.92). In table tennis action, Verna Edwards finished second in her group of the women’s singles 55-59 competition. Edwards beat Hong Zhang 3-0 but lose by the same score line to Patricia Benitez and Ron Tanga.

Caribbean Dream

The National Senior Games are open to masters athletes 50 years and over. The Games were first held in the 1987 in St. Louis, Missouri while Houston Texas, hosted the last edition in 2009.
