Johnson, Nero prevail at Bain 5k

KELVIN JOHNSON and Tonya Nero claimed the men’s and women’s titles, as the Air Bon Sonics Club staged its ninth annual George Lancelot Bain five-kilometre (5k) run.

The race began at the Arima Agricultural Co-operative Society on the Eastern Main Road and ended at the Bon Air Recreation Ground in Arouca.

Johnson completed the distance in 15 minutes 34 seconds, with his fellow Guyanese, Lionel Dandrade, behind in 16 minutes seven seconds.

There was a tight battle for third place, with former Trinidad and Tobago marathon king Curtis Cox taking the bronze medal in 16:13, followed by Jules La Rode (16:14) and Shirvan Baboolal (16:16).

Akeem Marshall, the Secondary Schools Cross Country winner, was sixth in 16:24, ahead of Jevon Joseph (16:36), Brian Maynard (17:18), Ashton Gill (17:19) and Guillermo Udenhout (17:24).

Nero, who have been triumphant in a number of long-distance races this year, strolled to victory in 18 minutes 32 seconds. Former national footballer Janelle Nedd was next in 18:50, with Kerticha John third in 19:46.

Completing the field were Paulette Lucess (21:21), April Francis (21:23), Jonette Sombrano (21:39), Christine Regis (22:27), Kershell McIntyre (22:36), Shirley Stapleton (22:41) and Wendy Shallow (23:03).
