Trinidad Express :: 25.11.2013

Tonya Nero returned a time of one hour, 20 minutes, 59 seconds to finish third in the women’s race, at the Martinique Half Marathon on Sunday.

Nero was one of four Trinidad and Tobago athletes who travelled to Martinique for the 13.1-mile event. Kerticha John (1:36:31) and Jenelle Nedd (1:38:48) were 11th and 12th, respectively, in the women’s race. Birtukan Fente Alemu was the class of the field, the Ethiopian winning in 1:17:25, for a huge cushion on second-placed Daylin Del Monte Torres (1:20:28), of Cuba. Fourth spot went to Ukraine’s Olena Burkovska (1:26:56).

The lone T&T runner in the men’s race, Curtis Cox finished seventh in 1:14:17.

Taye Damte Kuashu dominated his rivals, the Ethiopian topping the field with a 1:04:42 run. Rwanda’s Gervais Hakizimana (1:10:21) was a distant second, while France’s Eddy Boulate (1:10:38) and Claude Nohile (1:11:05) finished third and fourth, respectively. Guyana’s Cleveland Forde (1:14:07) was fifth, while another Frenchman, Tony Auster finished just ahead of Cox, in sixth.
