Strong men’s squads for World Relays

Trinidad Express :: 17.05.2014

Keston Bledman and Richard Thompson will headline the Trinidad and Tobago’s men’s 4x100 relay team that will compete in the inaugural IAAF World Relay in Nassau, Bahamas on May 24 and 25.

The 4x100 represents T&T’s best shot at a medal. T&T placed third in the event at the London 2012 Olympics but have since been upgraded to second following a positive drug test for Tyson Gay who was part of the silver medal-winning United States team.

The other members of the 4x100 squad for the World Relays are the experienced Marc Burns, Darrrell Brown and Rondell Sorillo.

T&T are fielding four teams to contest four of the five relay event.

The National Association of Athletics Administrations of Trinidad and Tobago recently named male and female teams to compete in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays and women’s teams only for the 4×200 and 4×800.

Michelle Lee Ahye heads the women’s 4x100 team of Kai Selvon, Kamaria Durant, Geronne Black, Aaliyah Telesford and Reyare Thomas.

The same women are also named for the 4x200 relay.

Lalonde Gordon is one of six on a strong men’s 4x 400 team. Renny Quow, Machel Cedenio, Jereem Richards, Jarrin Solomon and Zwede Hewitt complete the squad.

The women named for both the 4x400 and 4x800 metres relays are Shawna Fermin, Alena Brooks, Domonique Williams, Romona Modeste, Jessica James and Magnolia Howell.

Dexter Voisin (manager), Gerard Franklyn (coach), Dr Anyl Gopeesingh (Doctor), Zephrinus Nicholas (Massage therapist) and Dr Verne Alleyne (Physiotherapist) are the accompanying staff.

Some 90 men’s teams and 64 women’s teams representing 48 member federations will take part in the Relays in the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m, 4x800m and 4x1500m.

The top eight teams in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m will automatically qualify for the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

The top eight teams in each event will be awarded prize money with the gold medallists taking home no less than US$50,000.
