Lalonde, Thomas star at NACAC Champs

Lalonde Gordon and Mikel Thomas emerged as the star performers for Trinidad and Tobago as the country finished third on the medal table at the 2015 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Senior Track and Field Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.

T&T ended the three-day meet with two gold medals, three silver and five bronze for a grand total of 10. The only other country in double figures was United States, the table-toppers with 28 gold medals, 15 silver and eight bronze. Jamaica finished second with three gold medals, two silver and three bronze.

The Cubans were fourth with a single gold, four silver and four bronze medals.

Team T&T closed off their NACAC Seniors campaign late on Sunday with a fifth-placed finish in the women's 4x400 metres relay. T&T did not field a team in the men's 4x4.

In the women's race, Romona Modeste, Sparkle McKnight, Jessica James and Alena Brooks teamed up for a three minutes, 33.85 seconds clocking.

United States were runaway winners, Kala Funderburk, Charonda Williams, Tiffany Williams and Courtney Okolo combining for a championship record time of 3:25.39. Jamaica clocked 3:28.65 to claim silver, while bronze went to Bahamas in 3:31.80.

The two T&T gold medals at the NACAC meet were captured on Saturday by Gordon and Thomas.

Gordon won the men's 400m final in 44.89 seconds, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist following up on the 44.64 meet record he had established in Friday's qualifying round.

There was also a NACAC Seniors record for Thomas. The Pan American Games men's 110m hurdles silver medallist stopped the clock at 13.23 seconds to capture the NACAC title.

Semoy Hackett and McKnight were outstanding on Sunday.

Hackett picked up silver in the women's 200m final in a national record time of 22.51 seconds. And in the women's 400m hurdles, McKnight clocked a personal best 55.41 seconds to earn silver and a spot on the T&T team for the August 22-30 IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China.
