Walcott, Gordon selected for World Champs

Newsday :: 12.08.2015

OLYMPIC JAVELIN king Keshorn Walcott and reigning World 400-metre hurdles champion Jehue Gordon are among a field of 21 athletes who will represent the twin-island republic at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China from August 22-30.

The 22-year-old Walcott has enjoyed a successful 2015 thus far, having claimed gold at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada and also becoming the first Trinidad and Tobago javelin thrower to go over 90 metres when he set a personal best of 90.16m at the IAAF Diamond League Meet in Lausanne, Switzerland in July.

Gordon missed the Pan Am Games due to injury, but the gold medallist at the 2013 World Champs in Moscow, Russia (with a personal best clocking of 47.69 seconds) will be seeking to prove that his effort then was no fluke.

Other key inclusions in the Trinidad and Tobago team are quartermilers Machel Cedenio and Olympic bronze medallist Lalonde Gordon, Pan Am shot put queen Cleopatra Borel and teenaged sensation Khalifa St Fort. In related news, St Fort’s coach Ato Boldon, the quadruple Olympic medallist, will accompany the team as one of the sprint coaches.
