New Records In Five Events During 2016

Bernard Linley Track & Field Retrospect by Bernard Linley :: 26.09.2016

During 2016 national records were broken in five events.

When Machel Cedenio clocked 44.01 in the Olympic 400m final he bettered the oldest record (44.21 by Ian Morris) set back in 1992.

Two new records were also set in men`s events.

In the shot put Akeem Stewart reached 19.96 (to break his own 19.34 from 2013) and in the discus Quincy Wilson threw 59.65 (to break his own 59.60 from 2011).

Interestingly both new marks were done at the Yorke Stadium in Tobago, and a few months later Stewart won the javelin throw gold medal at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Michelle Lee Ahye twice improved the women`s 200m record of 22.51 set by Semoy Hackett in 2015.

First she ran 22.33 at the National Championships in June, and then she clocked 22.25 in her Olympic Games semifinal.

The fifth record came in the  women`s 4x400m relay when the national team comprising Janeil Bellile, Kai Selvon, Sparkle McKnight and Domonique Williams ran 3:30.37 (compared to the old mark of 3:30.67 from 2013).

The oldest records on the books now are dated 1994 (3000m Steeplechase of 8:49.82 and 10000m of 30:30.42) and both are held by Quintin John.

Three record breakers also hold the national junior records in the same event: Cedenio 45.13 at 400m in 2014, Wilson 54.12 at discus in 2010, and Bellile 3:35.28 at 4x400m relay in 2007.
