Hampton Athletic Club president Noel Hyland passed away on Wednesday.

National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA) president Ephraim Serrette told the Express Hyland was very committed to athletics, and will be remembered for his passion for the sport.

Hyland, who was described by Serrette as "one of my biggest supporters", had a long-standing relationship with the NAAA. At one time, Hyland was employed as a courier for the organisation, and up to the time of his death, had the responsibility of "putting things in place" ahead of NAAA meets.

Hyland was in charge of equipment at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Serrette explained, "and would ensure that the sectors were marked out for the javelin, shot put, discus. He would also head the team to put down the hurdles. I remember Hyland as an 800-metre runner in his young days. Later on, he competed as a Masters athlete."

In an NAAA press release, Serrette paid tribute to Hyland.

"It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Mr Noel Hyland, president, coach, technical official and Games Director of the Hampton Athletic Club. Mr Hyland was a great asset to our sport and he was well known by all members of the athletic fraternity. He will always be remembered by our organisation for his tremendous contribution to the sport of track and field athletics.

On behalf of the National Association of Athletics Administrations we wish to extend our most sincere condolences to his immediate family and by extension the Hampton Athletic Club. May his soul rest in eternal peace."""

Hyland was the step-father of national senior football team captain Khaleem Hyland.
