Zenith leads after day one at Juvenile Champs

Gold medal performances from Jhe-Armani Stewart and Daija Reid have helped put Zenith Athletics Club in the lead position after the first day of action in the National Gas Company (NGC)/ National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) Juvenile Championships at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday.

Zenith leads the combined team scores with 212 points after 26 events, seventeen points ahead of second-placed Rss Phoenix (195). In third spot is Burnley Athletic Club with 116. Rounding out the top five is Cougars (115) and Toco Tafac (72), respectively.

Stewart led Zenith's sweep of the boys' Under-9 long jump with the 14-year-old winning with a 2.84-metre leap to beat clubmates Kenai Reid into second with 2.70m and Kayden Young into third with 2.50m.

Stewart and Reid later partnered with Adrinna Holder and Mikaya Young, to win silver in the Mixed U-9 4x50m relays with a time of 35.65 behind gold medallists Burnley's quartet of Khari John, Amani Diaz, Soraiya Goodman and Jeniyah Hemlee, running in that order, with 35.23 and ahead of bronze medallists Cougars' Jadon Reid, Jadesha Mc Kenzie, Tae'Ha Alexander Joseph and Brielle Rigsby with 36.05.

Reid (Daija) reached the top of the podium in the girls' U-13 shot put with a 6.61m throw. Amaiyah Beckles of Mercury copped the silver medal with 6.20m while Kyla Jack of Cougars bagged the bronze with 5.55m.

Meanwhile, Michal Paul was outstanding for Concorde, who is in eighth place with 38 points, claiming three gold medals.

In the morning session, Paul leaped to victory in the boys' U-13 high jump with a 1.48m-effort ahead of Zenith's Jesuron Woods (1.40m) and Rss Phoenix's Donnell Stewart (1.35m), respectively.

He picked up theÊotherÊtwo golds in the evening session, first winning the U-13 80m hurdles with a 13.13-clocking. In second place was Niyelle Alleyne (Rss Phoenix) with 15.45 and in the third spot, Sean Hart (Cougars) with 16.40.

Paul then won the boys' U-13 400m in a time of 1:05.00, crossing the line ahead of Aiden Campbell (Lambeau Alliance) with 1:06.13 and Alleyne with 1:07.96, respectively.

The Championships resume today with action in the boys' U-9 ball throw, the girls' U-11 high jump, girls' U-9 long jump and boys' U-13 shot put, all starting from 10 am.
