Lendore 5th in 400m Diamond League run

T&T quarter-miler Deon Lendore placed fifth in the Men's 400m event at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, the penultimate round of the 2021 Wanda Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium on Friday.

Lendore, who placed third in the one-lap event on Tuesday in Italy, his first event following the virus-delayed Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan, lined up in lane six against a tough field and crossed the line in 45.06 seconds.

American Michael Cherry won in a new Meet Record and Personal Best of 44.03 while reigning Olympic bronze medallist, Kirani James of Grenada took silver in 44.51, and Botswana's Isaac Makwala, bronze in 44.83 while Holland's Liemarvin Bonevacia ended fourth in 45 seconds flat.

The others to finish the race were Belgium's Alexander Doom in 45.84 in the sixth position, followed by Jamaican Christopher Taylor (45.88), and Belgium's Jonathan Sacoor who clocked 46.66.

On Tuesday at the 57th Palio Citta della Quercia meet, at the Stadio Quercia, Rovereto, Lendore clocked 45.19 seconds, to follow winner Cherry with 44.55 and second-placed Isaac Makwala of Botswana in 45.02.

Both Cherry and Makwala emerged medallists in the men's 4x400m relay event with Americans taking gold and Botswana the bronze. T&T which included Lendore reached the final but placed eighth.

In the 400m event at the Olympic Games, the Lendore reached the semifinals after placing second in heat five with a time of 45.14. In semifinal heat one, Lendore clocked 44.93 in placing fourth and did not progress to the final.

In the medal race, Bahamian Steven Gardiner nabbed gold, Anthony Zambrano of Colombia copped silver and James, the bronze.
