Lendore, Gordon start Indoor season in style

Newsday :: 02.02.2013

Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic Men’s 4x400m bronze medallists, Deon Lendore and Lalonde Gordon, are currently on top of the world in the Men’s Indoor 400m and 200m events respectively.

Over the past six weeks, both national athletes have recorded several top performances on the US indoor circuit and presently lead the world in these respective indoor track events.

According to the latest International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) 2013 rankings, Texas A&M athlete Lendore rose to the top when he blasted to victory in the Men’s 400m at his school’s Triangular Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, on January 19. Lendore stopped the clock on 45.91 seconds and easily established the meet record. Surprisingly this was Lendore’s first indoor event of the season. His golden performance in Texas saw him fall just short of shattering the national record of 45.90s.

The former Queen’s Royal College student also leads the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is just over one second ahead of his nearest rival. The multiple Pan American Junior medallist is also ranked at the top on the NCAA Division one performance list and is the quickest in the South Eastern Conference (SEC) .

At the 2012 Summer Games, Lendore anchored the national Men’s 4x400m team to bronze in a national record time of 2:59.40.

Meanwhile, compatriot and fellow Olympic 4x400m bronze receiver Gordon, also sits at the pinnacle of the 200m Indoor rankings. Affirming his position at top was Gordon’s golden run in 20.60s at the Terrier Classic in Boston, USA, last Saturday.

The next best local on the US rankings is field athlete, Hilenn James, who currently sits in eighth position in the Women’s shot put. James recorded a personal best distance of 16.80 on January 25 at the Razor Invitational in Arkansas.

TT hurdler and Texas A&M athlete, Wayne Davis follows some distance behind in 19th spot on the Men’s 60m hurdles (7.88).

In the Division Two standings, Reyare Thomas (Abilene Christian) is fifth in the Women’s 200m. Thomas recently clocked a personal best distance of 24.16 and is also eighth in the 60m (7.60s). Jameel Walcott (St Augustine) sits in ninth place of the Men’s 800m (1:53.25).

On the Junior College rankings, South Plains athlete Elton Walcott is third best in the Men’s triple jump. He holds a distance of 15.59, when he leapt to victory at the Texas Tech Masked Invitational on January 18. Walcott is also 17th in the long jump (6.71). In the Men’s 200m, Dan-Neil Telesford (Iowa Central) is ninth (21.82) and 24th in the 400m (49.31) event.

In the Division One Conference rankings, Emmanuel Stewart and Kashef Daniel lead the charge. Stewart (Morgan State) heads the Men’s weight throw in the Mid Eastern with his personal best of 18.70 and is also fifth in the shot put (14.85).

Additionally, Daniel (Arkansas State) tops the list in the Men’s high jump in the Sun Belt Conference with a PB of 2.10.
